Years ago, I listened to a podcast interview with neuroscientist Dr. Tali Sharot. Her research found that our brains tend to freeze when confronted with fear. When we perceive a threat or danger, our natural instinct is to lock down, retreat, and do nothing. On the other hand, when we anticipate something good, our brain mobilizes us into action. Fear stops us in our tracks, but hope propels us to move forward.
Since then, I’ve often noticed how this shows up in behavior. We put off those routine medical screenings because we fear bad news. We stay in the unrewarding job because we’re afraid that the next one might be even worse. On the other hand, we advocate for social justice issues and participate in green initiatives because we see that our actions can have tangible, real benefits. We’re motivated by the hope that these projects embody.
